Our Curriculum
Our curriculum offers a range of experiences indoors and outdoors, both adult led, and child initiated, which engage, enthuse and enlighten our children’s love of learning. Our intention is to provide a culture of curiosity through magical moments and to support children to develop a positive and enquiring mind that enables them to learn effectively. If each child is given the best opportunity and support in life this will enable them to reach their full potential. We recognise that children arrive at Highmoor Nursery School having had different experiences to each other, and we aim to address any inequalities so that children are not limited by their social or economic circumstances. We see each child as an individual and tune into their interests in order to build upon their knowledge and skills. We introduce them to aspects of our wonderful world that are new to them and which they have yet to experience.
We are regulated by Ofsted and as such follow the National Curriculum for under 5’s, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which is designed to ensure all children learn and develop appropriately and are kept healthy and safe during their vital early years. Research has shown that the first few years of a child’s development have a major impact on their future life chances. All our children have access to many opportunities and experiences to help them develop a broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for them to progress through school and life. We strive to model and teach the importance of healthy eating and oral health and the need to be physically active, whatever a child’s abilities.
The EYFS has 4 guiding principles which shape everything we do. It states that:
-
Every child is a unique child, constantly learning, resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
-
Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
-
Children learn and develop well in enabling environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between the nursery and parents
-
Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates
The EYFS has seven areas of learning and development, and through these we ignite children’s curiosity and enthusiasm and enhance their everyday experiences. Exposure to the awe and wonder of the world and a broad tapestry of opportunities and experiences helps our children get a sense of what they enjoy and where their natural talents lie.
Our staff have a wealth of experience which means high quality and passionate delivery of our curriculum. We forge strong relationships with parents and carers and work with other professionals and the wider community to achieve our goals. We are highly inclusive, meeting children’s differing needs and learning styles and interests. We understand the individual and diverse ways that children develop and learn which helps us to support and extend children’s learning in and across all seven areas of learning.
